Obituary

Agnes Virginia Ellis Smith, 98, of Washington, died peacefully on May 2, 2024, at the Concordia Hospice Donnell House.

Agnes was born on December 23, 1925, in the Wolfdale part of Washington, a daughter of the late Clarence and Mary Ellen Lodge Ellis.

She was a 1944 graduate of Trinity High School where she met her future husband, Lloyd, a member of the same graduating class.

Agnes and Lloyd married after his return from serving in the Navy during World War II.  They celebrated 68 years of marriage before Lloyd's passing on October 30, 2014.

Agnes was a Christian raised in the former Third United Presbyterian Church of Washington..  After retiring back to Washington County, Agnes joined the North Ten Mile Baptist Church in Amwell Township. She was a member of the Martha V. Paul Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and was also the reunion secretary for her Trinity graduating class

She enjoyed cooking, baking, traveling, camping, sewing, and quilting.

Agnes was a loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, as well as a trusted administrative assistant in business and college settings.  She served for nearly 20 years in the registrar's office at Thiel College in Greenville, PA.

Surviving are her children, L. Stephen (Kimberly) Smith Jr., of Amwell Township, Mary Ann (Dennis) Kauffman, of Sarasota, Florida, and Barbara Ann (David) Willkens, of Hickory; six grandchildren, Sarah S. Turner, Bradford S. Smith, Paul S. Kauffman, Torry A. Kauffman, Becky L. Willkens and Kathy V. Willkens; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased in addition to her husband and parents  are brothers, Ralph, Robert and Thomas Ellis; and  sisters, Anna Mary Grimm, Marie Young, Betty Jean Ellis, Ruth Carlisle, and Frances Reese.

Friends and family will be received on Sunday, May 5, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Nichol Funeral Home, 1873 East Maiden St. Washington, PA

A Celebration of the Resurrection will be held at North Ten Mile Baptist Church, 322 Ridge Church Road, Amity, on Monday, May 6, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Wesley Kavanaugh officiating.  A 10 a.m. visitation at the church precedes the service.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the North Ten Mile Baptist Church or Citizens Library of Washington.
