Charles W. "Sonny" Roberts Sr. 88, of Lone Pine died Thursday March 07, 2024 in his home. He was born in Lone pine on October 28, 1935, son of the late Harry V. and Florence Walker Roberts. He attended Lone Pine Elementary school and was a 1953 graduate of Trinity High School. He worked at Hazel Atlas Glass Factory, Molybdenum Corp, and the Bentleyville Telephone Company from where he retired in 1999 as an outside superintendent.
Sonny served as military police in the US Army from 1958-1960.
Faith played a central role in Sonny's life evident through his active involvement in his church communities, initially at Lone Pine Christian Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and later at North Ten Mile Baptist Church. He found joy in singing with his wife, often harmonizing to hymns and Elvis' "The Wonder of You". Being a part of the community and small town was important to him. He was on the Washington County Democratic Committee, the Lone Pine and Pinhook Dartball teams, Lone Pine Softball team, coached youth baseball, was a boy scout leader, an avid Pittsburgh Sports fan enjoyed woodworking, and loved hunting and fishing, especially with his family and all the memories created.
Sonny was a founding member of Lone Pine Volunteer Fire Department and served as their first President.
On August 14, 1957, Sonny married his beloved Betty Jean Stephens, with whom he shared over 66 years of marriage. Together, they were active participants in their community, affectionately known as the "It Couple" to many.
Surviving in addition to his wife Betty Jean Roberts are daughter Becky Sue Beecham (Jack Jr.) two sons Charles W. Roberts Jr. (Missi), Aaron Francis Roberts (Ember), 12 grandchildren Samantha McGlothlin (Nate), Amanda Beecham, Sara Eaton (Joey), Jack Beecham III, Charles W. Roberts III, Clinton L. Roberts, Ed Nestor, Jordan Dobrzynski (Matthew), Frankie Roberts, Phoebe Roberts, Bodie Roberts, Banks Roberts, six great-grandchildren Victoria McGlothlin, Eleanor McGlothlin, Miles Henry Eaton, Grace Roberts, Maliyah Jo Dobrzynski, and Josie Dobrzynski, as well as several precious nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his parents are siblings, baby brother Harry Roberts Jr., James Roberts, Kenneth Roberts, and Beatrice June Bedillion.
Family and friends will be received Sunday from 1-3 and 5-7p.m. in the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington where funeral services will be held on Monday March 11, 2024 at 11:00a.m. with Pastor Linda Mankey officiating.
