Dewey Lese, 89, of Washington, PA died peacefully at home on Friday, August 25, 2017 after a courageous battle with leukemia.
He was born on September 21, 1927 in Cokeburg, PA, a son of the late Dewey Sr. and Rachel Antonucci Lese.
As a young man, Mr. Lese left high school to enlist in the Navy and served until the end of WWII.
After his discharge he gained employment at Corning Glass in Charleroi.
At his mother's insistence he went back to Ellsworth High School and graduated in 1948.
Mr. Lese went on to work at Bethlehem Steel Mines for over 35 years.
His mining career spanned numerous jobs ranging from hand loader to dispatcher and ultimately he retired in 1983 as Transportation Foreman.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and served as an usher for many years.
Mr. Lese was an active member of the Washington Lions Club for 42 years.
He served as a President, Zone Chairman and Regional Chairman and was recipient of both the Melvin Jones award and the PA Fellow award.
Mr. Lese was on the Board of Directors at the Washington Greene County Blind Association and had been a member of the Marianna American Legion Post #744, the Cokeburg Sons of Italy Lodge #609, where he served as treasurer, the Washington County Youth Conservation Camp, the Cokeburg Moose, and the Marianna Volunteer Fire Company.
Mr. Lese attended opening day of the Meadows Race Track in 1963 and was a lifelong harness-racing enthusiast.
He belonged to the Sons of Italy Bowling team and the Cokeburg Moose Golf league, and through the years played soccer, baseball, and softball for various teams in Cokeburg, Marianna, Ontario, Van Voorhis, Dunlevy and Hazelkirk.
On June 28, 1956 he was married to Patricia Louise Serenta in the Saints Mary and Ann Catholic Church in Marianna, PA by the Rev. Zygmunt V. Szarnicki.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 61 years, are a daughter Linda Ellen Lese of Cranberry Twp, PA and a son David Dewey (Annette) Lese and grandson Dominic David Lese of Houston, TX. Also surviving are nieces and nephews
Rachelle Moore, Pamela Hoffman, Miller Lese, Martin Lese, Maureen Speakman, Alexander Lese, William Lese, Alfred Lese, Joseph Lese, John Lese,
Mary Lou Lese, Kim Wilson, Lynne Gilli,
Gayla Baron, Sean Moore, Barron Valent, Bradley Valent, Patsy Stepp Pryor, Regis Stepp, Elizabeth Difilippo Moschetta, Anthony Difilippo and William Serenta, many other family members, and countless close friends, all of whom loved and respected Mr. Lese dearly.
Deceased are brothers and sisters Anthony Lese, Miller (Skill) Lese, William (Gi) Lese, John (Snags) Lese, Marie Moore and Irene Valent.
Family and Friends will be received from 3 until 8:00 P.M. Sunday August 27 and 2 until 8:00 P.M. Monday August 28, 2017 in the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington, PA 15301. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 A.M.
Tuesday August 29, 2017 in the Immaculate Conception Church, Washington.
Interment will follow in Sts. Mary and Ann Catholic Cemetery, Marianna.
