Obituary

Donald L. Smith,  90. Of Washington died in his home on Friday June 25, 2021.  He was born in Washington on February 28, 1931, a son of the late Alfred E. and Anna Gaus Smith.  He was a 1949 graduate of Trinity High School.  Mr. Smith proudly served in the United States Army from October 1952 where he received a national defense service medal, Korean service medal with two bronze service stars, ROK Presidential unit citation, United Nations Service medal, and a Combat infantryman badge before being honorably discharged to the United States Army Reserves in 1954.  He worked at Hazel Atlas Glass in Washington and then Trinity Area School District until his retirement in 1993.  He was a 77 year member of Amity United Methodist Church and Liberty Methodist Church.  He also was a North Strabane grange member, played on the church dartball team, was a Trinity Constable, member of Houston American Legion, was an avid gardener, enjoyed watching birds and wildlife, and especially loved attending his grandkids sporting activities.

On March 8, 1953 he was married to Freda B. Thomas in her home by Rev. Robert Lash.  They shared over 41 years of marriage before her passing in 1994

He is survived by three daughters  Eva Jean Smith (Bill Hart) of Washington, Anna Jane Westfall (Thomas) of Taylorstown, Eleanor B. Smith (Larry Day) of Washington,  son  Harold W. Smith (Amy) of Bulger, son in law  John Fox of Washington,  and longtime girlfriend of his late son Ronald,  Rose Vescio of Washington.  He is also survived by, four grandchildren Crystal Noecker, Paul Westfall (AbbyJo), Elizabeth Angle (Devon), Luke Smith, a great granddaughter Aspen Noecker, several nieces and nephews, two sister-in laws Leanna Schafer and Martha Smith.  Deceased in addition to his wife Freda, a daughter Beverley Fox, a son Ronald L. Smith, two sisters Virginia Trexel, Doris Burnfield, two brothers, Bernard Smith and Joseph Smith.  The family would like to thank special friend and excellent care giver to their Pappy, Carol Miller

Family and friends will be received Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8p.m. in the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday June 30, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Larry Wiltrout officiating.  Interment will follow in Forrest lawn Garden Cemetery, McMurray.  An online guestbook may be signed at www.nicholfuneralhome.com
