Obituary

Edward H. Phillips, 85 of Glyde (Eighty-Four), PA slept peacefully away in his home after a lengthy illness. He was born October 7, 1925 to Henry B. Phillips and Eva Lena Moniger Phillips in Nettle Hill, Greene Co. PA as an identical twin to his "other half", Edwin. On August 27, 1953, he married Marjorie Ellen Ross, who survives. He was the most wonderful father to his only daughter, Amy Ross (Scott) Manko and the best loved Pap to his grandson Drew Edward Ross Manko. He has gone to join his sisters Evelyn Smith, Opal Mikesell, Norma Jean McCready and brothers Edwin and Herschel in heaven. Edward is also survived by his beloved "girls", nieces Carol Sue Haught, Cathy (David) Cox, Sharon (Jim) Stewart and Lori Phillips as well as nephew Bruce McCready. On July 14, 1946 he was discharged from the US Army 202nd Quartermaster Corps which led to his lifelong membership in the American Legion, serving as Commander of Swart-Phillips Post 897 at Glyde for many years. He also served on the 25th District American Legion staff. He was also a longtime member of Sunset Lodge #623 Free & Accepted Masons and Consistory at the Valley of Coudersport where he received the 32nd degree and the Meritorious Service Award. Mr. Phillips retired in 1987 from US Steel's Edgar Thomson plant in Braddock, PA where he had worked for 46 years. He served as a Trustee at the First United Methodist Church in Washington, PA where he was a long-time member. His great pleasures included working on his wife's family farm, tinkering with Farmall Tractors, visiting his country neighbors in one of his antique vehicles and drinking coffee with his friends at the Toot-n-Scoot. He will be dearly missed by his beloved Peke-a-poo, Lucy Lu. Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8p.m. in the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington, where funeral services will be held on Friday August 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. A masonic service will be held on Thursday at 7:30p.m. by Sunset Lodge #623. Full military rites will be accorded by Swart Phillips American legion Post 897 of Glyde.
