Harry A. Rasel 87 of Washington died Monday November 4 2013 in his home He was born in Amity on January 22, 1926 a son of the late Harry M. and Cora Bolton Rasel. He attended Sowers School and Trinity High School. He joined and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, being one of the first soldiers to land on Iwo Jima where he was wounded and later awarded the Purple Heart Meda He also participated in the occupation of Japan from September to October 1945. He earned a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Sowers worked as a coal miner and Warehouse foreman for Fairmont Supply from where he retired in 1992. He was a member of American Legion Post 175 of Washington, Washington County Marine Corps League Detachment 1138, life member of Washington Arms Club. He enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with friends. He also enjoyed spending time with friends at the legion. On September 5, 1979 he married Helena P. Hetrick in Frostburg Maryland who is deceased. Surviving are a sister Mary Lou Bercosky, three stepdaughters Debra (Randy) Wagers, Vicki (Gary) Rush, Tamara (Bill) Johnson, five step grandchildren Michelle, Randy Jr., Steven, Kelli, and April, five step great grandchildren Myranda, Kourtney, Max, Gavin, and Addison as well as many nieces nephews and his best friends Tom and Katie Landish Deceased in addition to his wife and parents are five sisters Ruth Watson, Martha Briggs, Idell Briggs, Elsie Rasel, Bernice Rasel, six brothers F. Edwin Rasel, Albert Rasel, Frank Rasel, Leroy Rasel, Paul Rasel, and Norvin Rasel, and a step grandson Herb. Family and friends will be received Thursday from 3-8p.m. in the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington where funeral services will be held at 10:00a.m. Friday November 8, 2013. Interment will be held Saturday November 9, 2013 at 9:00a.m. at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies
