Obituary

Lala Edna Chalfant Dicks 104, of Washington passed from this life and began her eternal life on Thursday March 24, 2016 from the Washington County Health Center.  She was born in Star Junction on September 11, 1911 a daughter of the late Nathan and Mary Effington Chalfant.  She is now with her nine brothers and sisters, who preceded her in death. When she was a young child, a missionary came to Grindstone, PA where she heard the gospel of Jesus Christ and committed her life to him. She fell in love with Elmer Dicks, who delivered bread to her home, married him and shared over 49 years of life with him until he passed away in December 1982. Together they had five sons; the late James (Margaret) of Washington,PA, Charles (Hilda) of Chattanooga, TN, Kenneth (Ruth) of Gatesville, TX, George (Sue) of Washington, PA, and Herbert (Darlene) of Claysville, PA. She had ten beloved grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren nine great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family, but all of her extended family will remember her for the love and concern she showed to each of them. Lala was a member of Broad Street Baptist Church for many years and then a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over forty years. She loved her church family and was involved in church activities including coking for special occasions, cleaning the church, helping in Bible School, and other activities where she could help. She enjoyed children and often worked in the church nursery. She was a very active person and loved to work in the yard, was constantly rearranging her furniture and having Elmer remodel their home. It was a joke in her home that before you go to bed at night, turn on the light first, because the bed likely was not where it was in the morning. They often traveled to North Carolina to visit with very close friends. Family and friends will be received on Monday from 2p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington, PA where the celebration of her life will be Tuesday March 29, 2016 at 11:00a.m. with Rev. Fred McCloskey leading the service. Interment will follow in the Washington Cemetery.
