Larry George Wherry 86 of Scenery Hill died Sunday January 18, 2026 in Canonsburg hospital. He was born in Washington on July 3, 1937, the only son of G. Emerson and Aberdean G. Rodgers Wherry. George was a 1957 graduate of Ellsworth High School and then went on to Penn State University where he graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry and a minor in Chemistry. George served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard until he was honorably discharged in 1963 and he continued to serve in United States Army Reserve until he was honorably discharged in 1968. He was a lifetime member of Bentleyville American Legion Post 165.
Above everything George was a farmer first. He had a passion for farming and his sheep. He was an advocate in sheep study, working with West Virginia University, where he frequently would be a guest speaker for classes. He was a member of the Washington County Farm Bureau from 1978-the present, where he served as President from 2008-2018. He also served on the Pennsylvania State Farm Bureau Board from 2013-2018. In 2012 he received the Distinguished Service Award to Agriculture. George was also a lifetime member of the Sheep and Woolgrowers, and served as President of Washington County Sheep and Woolgrowers.
He worked as a mechanic in the coal mine for 28 years and was a member of the United Mine Workers Union.
George was a hard worker and enjoyed being active throughout not only the farming community, but his community of Scenery Hill. He was a member of the Bentworth School Board for 23 years, was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge, and a local Grange member. Scenery Hill Community Church, formerly Scenery Hill Methodist Church was very important to George. He served as a layleader at the church and was a chairman of the board for church for over 10 years.
He also enjoyed reading and was a history buff. To unwind he enjoyed playing cards, especially solitaire and hearts.
He shared 47 years of marriage with Patricia Elizabeth Swartz Wherry, whom he married on September 26, 1962 in Winchester Virginia. Together they raised six children and shared much love before her passing in 2009.
He is survived by his children; Lu-Ann Kubicar and husband Craig, Lisa Wherry, Larry Wherry, Jennifer Wherry, Diana Petrie and husband Scott, and Mary Elizabeth Wherry, ten grandchildren Tiffani Hupman, Courtnie Wherry, Austin Petrie, Garrett Petrie, Joshua Wherry, Grace Brantes-Wherry, Gabriel Kubicar, Elizabeth White (Joe), Jasmine Wherry, Ryan Wherry, four great-grandchildren Case Hupman, Caroline Long-Kubicar, Charlie Wherry, and Dante Hupman as well as many friends. Deceased in addition to his parents is a grandson Matthew Ryan Wherry.
Family and friends will be received Thursday January 22, 2026 in the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington from 2-4p.m and 6-8p.m. Additional visitation will be held on Friday January 23, 2026 from 12:00p.m.-1:00P.m in the Scenery Hill Community Church where funeral services will be held at 1:00P.M. with Pastor Anthony Darby Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Scenery Hill Cemetery. Military Rites will be accorded by Bentleyville American Legion Post 165.
