Lloyd S. Smith Educator and WWII Veteran Lloyd S. Smith, 89, of Washington, formerly of Amwell Township, died Thursday, October 30, 2014 at Washington Hospital. He was born July 10, 1925, near Ten Mile, a son of W. Olan and Pauline Swihart Smith. Lloyd joined the U.S. Navy during his senior year of high school to serve in World War II. He served on the USS Jansen, a destroyer escort, and completed tours of duty in the North Atlantic, Pacific, and European theaters. He was a Trinity High School graduate with the class of 1944. Lloyd graduated from Penn State University in 1950 and spent more than 35 years as an educator in PA. During college, he taught agriculture to local military veterans. After Penn State, he taught students vocational agriculture first at Cochranton and then at Mercer Area High School. He earned a Master's degree in Administration at the University of Pittsburgh and in 1960 became the high school principal in Jamestown, PA where he served for 22 years. In Jamestown, Lloyd volunteered with the Lions Club and served as an Elder at the Jamestown Presbyterian Church. He married his wife, Agnes, after the war and they celebrated 68 years of marriage this past August 10. Lloyd and Agnes retired to Washington County where he served on the board of the Citizens Library including as president. Lloyd was a Deacon at the North Ten Mile Baptist Church and served on the North Ten Mile Baptist Cemetery Association, and the Amwell Township Water Authority and Zoning boards. Surviving are his wife Agnes Ellis Smith; children, L. Stephen (Kimberly) Smith Jr., of Amwell Township, Mary Ann (Dennis) Kauffman, of Sarasota, Florida, and Barbara Ann (David) Willkens, of Hickory. Also surviving are a brother, James F. Smith, of Fairfield, CA, a sister, Sarah Margie Davis of Amwell Township; six grandchildren, Sarah S. Turner, Bradford S. Smith, Paul S. Kauffman, Torry A. Kauffman, Becky L. Willkens and Kathy V. Willkens; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased is a sister, Lena (Richard) Mowl. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 6, in Nichol Funeral Home, 1873 East Maiden St., Washington. A Celebration of the Resurrection will be held at North Ten Mile Baptist Church, 322 Ridge Church Road, Amity, on Friday, November 7 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Gary Schneider officiating. Additional visitation at the church will be held at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to North Ten Mile Baptist Church and Citizens Library of Washington. Full military rites will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175 of Washington.
