Obituary

Retired Major Lyle H. Szupinka 64 of Amwell Township died Thursday June 9, 2011 in his home. He was born February 14, 1947 in Canonsburg , a son of the late John Felix and Elizabeth Szafraniec Szupinka. He was a graduate of Chartiers Houston High School. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh where he earned his bachelor's degree. Lyle proudly served in both the Pennsylvania State Police and the United States marine Corp. He served with the Pennsylvania State Police for 37 years retiring as a major. He was stationed throughout Pennsylvania retiring from the Washington Barracks. He was Area III Commander, served as head of security during 9/11 crisin in Shanksville, Somerset County, where he was one of the first responders at the crash site. He also attended the FBI academ, taught first responder courses for the government. Lyle was also a lifelong member of Lighthouse Community Church where he was a Sunday School teacher. He was an avid hunter, trapper, history buff who enjoyed golfing, biking, and loved spending time with his family. On October 5, 1974 he married Cynthia Ruthann Scott Szupinka who survives. Surviving inaddition to his wife of 37 years are three children carrie Lynn Szupinka (Dale naser) of Prosperity, Amanda Lee (Scott) fellows of Scottsburg, Indiana, Brian Lyle (Kiley) Szupinka of Washington, a brother John (Mary Lou) szupinka of Houston, 5 grandchildren Abigale Leah Flati, Graydon Lyle Flati, Gracie Isabelle Fellows, Shay Elizabeth Szupinka, as well as several nieces and nephews. Family and friends wil be received on Sunday from 2-4 nd 6-8p.m. and Monday form 2- and 6-8 p.m. in the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington, PA 15301. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday June 14, 011 at 11:00a.m. in the Lighthouse community Church with rev.Duane Wolfe officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Herman cemetery.
