Obituary
Mona Rae Mercante, 83, of Marianna passed awaySaturday June 19, 2021. She was born August
14, 1937 in Washington, PA, a daughter of the late Ray and Sara Sowers. She attended West
Bethlehem Schools. Mona married the late Robert A. Mercante Sr. on May 31, 1956 and devoted
her life to her family as a homemaker and business owner. The two shared over 63 years of
marriage.
Mona enjoyed time spent at the casino, doing word search puzzles and watching Jeopardy. In
addition to her family devotion, she spent selfless hours helping care for others. Mona found so
much joy with her family, whether it be a birthday celebration, a holiday or just a dinner together on a
Sunday.
She is survived by two sons; Robert Mercante, Jr. of Lone Pine and Rick (Amy) Mercante of
Harmony, PA as well as brother; Richard Sowers of Washington, PA and a sister; Shirley Newman
of Gilbert, AZ. In addition, she is survived by two granddaughters; Lisa (Ryan) Post and Alina
Mercante, a great grandson Anthony Post, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters; Lois Crispin, Cora Skirchak and Marjorie Sowers and a
brother; Ken Sowers.
Friends will be received from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday June 22 in the Nichol
Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street, Washington, PA. Additional visitation will be held from
10:00 – 11:00am Wednesday June 23 in the funeral home, where a service will be conducted at
11:00am. Interment will follow in Horn Cemetery, West Bethlehem Township.
