Norman Mickoloff 91 of Marianna died Wednesday February 9, 2012 in the Donnell House. He was born July 8, 1920 in Marianna a son of the late John and Irene Macdonsy Mickoloff. He attended West Bethlehem schools. Mr. Mickoloffserved in the U.S. Army during WWII 1942-1945 in the 2nd Infantry Division 38th Regiment Cannon Company. He earned the rank of 1st sergeant during the war, and received the bronze star for being part of five major campaigns including D-Day where he landed at Omaha Beach and the battle of the Bulge. While there are many things he was proud of when he served. Norman loved talking about being an interpreter when the American Forces met the Russians at the Elbe River in the Czech Republic. He has been interviewed and quoted in a variety of written articles, stories, books, and most recently a video recorded interview in 2009 by a Historian for The National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Mr. Mickoloff worked in Bethlehem Mines # 58 in Marianna for many years as a coal miner and crane operator until his retirement in 1979. He was an active member of St. Nicholas Old Believers Russian Orthodox Church where he was a past President of the Church Committee and over the years served as a trustee. He enjoyed gardening, keeping up with the news worthy events, and being with family. He was a member of American Legion Post 744 of Marianna where he served as Past Commander as well as trained and formed the first honor gueard. On July 14, 1968 he married Irene Zarankin who survives. Surviving are his wife of 43 years Irene Mickoloff, daughter Marenea M. Mickoloff of Arlington, MA, a son Paul Mickoloff and wife Jill of Richeyville, 3 grandchildren Ryan P., Brendan N., and Alayna L. Mickoloff as well as a fist cousin who was like a brother Duke Alexander, and many nieces and nephews. Deceased in adition to his paretns are a sister Frances Morosky and 2 brothers Paul and Robert Mickoloff. Family and friends will be received Sunday from 2-4 and 6-9p.m. in the Nichol Funeral Home 1728 main Street Marianna pa 15345. Funeral services will be held Monday February 13, 212 at 9:00a.m. in the St Nicholas Old Believers Russian Orthodox Church with Father Larry Evanoff officiating. Interment will follow.
