Obituary

Walter Edward Piatt 93 of Washington died Wednesday July 13, 2022 in Southmont Presbyterian Senior Care. Born in Bethel Township, now Bethel Park, Allegheny County, PA, on October 27, 1928, a son of  the late Walter G. Piatt and Mary Winfred Crouch Piatt. Walter attended Washington County Schools and was a 1947 graduate of Trinity High School.  He joined Iron Workers Local #3 Pittsburgh in the summer of 1946 and after  high school moved to Allegheny County working in steel erection for various companies.  Walter served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 in Korea as a Sergeant in charge of a recovery section.  In addition to the various medals received for his service in the military, he was awarded the Soldiers Medal for participating in extinguishing an ammunition dump fire.  In 1957 Walter moved to Irwin in West Moreland County. In addition to his employment as an Iron Worker, he and his first wife owned and operated the Irwin Dairy Queen from 1974 through 1985. As an Iron Worker he worked in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, and Alabama.

Walter was a member of the Lone Pine Christian Church, American Legion, and Shidle Lodge Number 601 in Irwin where he was Master in1976.

In 1951 he married Dorothy Ann Emory, the mother of his six children.  In 1990 he returned to Washington County when he married Joanne Moninger Hough Piatt, who survives him.  She was the blessing of his life.

In addition to Joanne "Judy" are surviving children, Barbara Ann Piatt of Maryland, Norma Jean Piatt of California, Nancy Jane Piatt of Maryland, Rebecca Sue Kotch (Matt) of Rhode island, and Paul Allen Piatt (Robyn) of Mississippi, three step children Matt Hough (Jody), Beth Boehm (Dave), and Jami Kanalis (Josh) all of Pennsylvania.  Grandchildren include Michael Swank, Austin Kotch, and Stephanie Piatt, step grandchildren Nate, McKenzie, Whitney and Tanner Hough, Dylan and Skylar Boehm, and Austin and Evan Smith, six great grandchildren and five great step grandchildren.  Mr. Piatt's surviving siblings include his sister Rose King (Tom), two half-brothers Darrell and David, and two half-sisters, Carol and Virginia.

Deceased in addition to his first wife and parents are his eldest child James Edward Piatt, sister Catherine "Katy" and brother John "Jack" Piatt

Family and friends will be received Monday July 18, 2022 from 11:00a.m.-1:00p.m. in the Nichol Funeral Home 1873 East Maiden Street Washington, where funeral services will be held at 1:00p.m.  Interment will follow in Lone Pine Cemetery.     An online guestbook may be signed at www.nicholfuneralhome.com
